NEW YORK CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT URGES NEW YORKERS TO PRACTICE FIRE SAFETY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta tomorrow will hold a Holiday Fire Safety press conference at the quarters of Ladder Company 166 and Engine Company 318 in Brooklyn to urge New Yorkers to exercise caution this winter season. While the holiday season is traditionally a joyous occasion, it’s often marred by unnecessary and preventable tragedies. On average, civilian fire injuries and fatalities citywide more than double during the winter season (November, December, January and February).

According to the FDNY Bureau of Fire Investigation, the leading causes of civilian fire fatalities and injuries are candles, careless smoking and misuse of extension cords. The latest numbers of civilian fire-related fatalities will also be released tomorrow.
