FIRE COMMISSIONER NICHOLAS SCOPPETTA TO PRESIDE
AT ANNUAL FDNY MEDAL DAY CEREMONY
Event Honors 43 Firefighters, Fire Officers, Fire Marshals
and Fire Companies for Heroic Actions in the Line of Duty
Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta tomorrow will preside over the annual FDNY Medal Day Ceremony. The event, held in front of City Hall, will honor 43 firefighters, fire officers, fire marshals and fire companies for heroic actions at fires, water emergencies and fire investigations. This year’s top honor – the Dr. Harry M. Archer Medal – will be given to Firefighter James F. Mills of Brooklyn Ladder Company 176 for rescuing a fellow firefighter who was found unconscious and face down in a pool of water after having transmitted a “mayday” at a fire in Brooklyn. This medal is awarded every third year to one of the past three James Gordon Bennett Medal winners, the medal given annually to the member of the Department with the most outstanding act of heroism.
Among the medal winners is Firefighter Sean Cummins, of Rescue Company 1, who will receive the Captain Denis W. Lane Memorial Medal. Firefighter Cummins is a U.S. Army Airborne Civil Affairs Sergeant currently serving in the 404th Civil Affairs Battalion stationed just outside Balad, Iraq. Firefighter Cummins’ wife, Maureen Cummins, will accept the medal on his behalf.
