UPDATE ON 10-ALARM FIRE IN GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN
Fire Department operations continue today in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, more than 55 hours since a 10-alarm fire broke out Tuesday in a complex of warehouses along the waterfront. Currently, demolition crews are clearing the site and uncovering smoldering debris for extinguishment. The FDNY has two engine companies and two tower ladders on scene, supervised by a fire deputy chief. In addition, fire boats are being called in periodically to supply large water streams for difficult to reach hot spots.
This work is expected to continue at least through tomorrow. Not until the area is made safe and the fires completely extinguished will Fire Marshals be able to begin a physical examination of the fire scene, specifically the area where investigators believe the fire started.
