NEW YORK BLOOD CENTER HONORS FDNY MEMBERS WITH
PLAQUE DEDICATION FOR PARTICIPATION IN
LIFE-SAVING BONE MARROW DONATION PROGRAM
One firefighter and one former FDNY firefighter will be reunited for the first time
with
bone marrow recipients
Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta tomorrow will take part in the 2 nd Annual “Honor Roll of Life” ceremony with New York Blood Center (NYBC) President Dr. Robert L. Jones and Chairman of the (NYBC) Board of Trustees Mr. Howard Milstein. The ceremony is dedicated to the firefighters who have donated life-saving bone marrow to individuals suffering from a variety of acute diseases. At the event, firefighters John Jensen and former firefighter Joe Kazlauskas will meet with Brooke Williams and Glenn Hale, to whom they both respectively donated life-saving bone marrow transplants.
The plaque, an “Honor Roll of Life,” has the names of more than 70 firefighters who have donated bone marrow to men, women and children diagnosed with diseases ranging from leukemia to Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In addition, members who have donated bone marrow since the first ceremony last year will also have their names added to the plaque.
Throughout the years, the Fire Department has encouraged its members to donate blood as well as other blood products such as blood platelets and bone marrow. To date, the FDNY is the single-largest bone marrow registry group with more than 8,000 firefighters registered.
