FIRE COMMISSIONER NICHOLAS SCOPPETTA TO ACCEPT NEW VEHICLE FOR THE FDNY FAMILY ASSISTANCE UNIT

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta tomorrow will accept the keys to a brand new 2005 Nissan Quest “Mini-Van” donated by Howard Koeppel of Koeppel Nissan for the Fire Department’s Family Assistance Unit (FAU). FAU is the critical link between the Fire Department and families of current members suffering through hardships and tragedies, such as a line-of-duty-death or serious illness.

The FAU was established in February of 2002 and now serves over 450 Fire and EMS families. The FAU staff is the primary liaison between the Fire Department and FDNY families. FAU provides families with access to resources including the Counseling Services Unit and information regarding Department benefits. In addition, FAU staff visits hospitals, burn centers, firehouses, family homes, and attends the wakes and funerals for both Line of Duty and Administrative Line of Duty losses. This new vehicle will allow the FAU staff to continue offering the FDNY families the best possible support and care that is needed.
