NEW YORK CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT AND HEARST BURN CENTER AT NEW YORK-PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL/WEILL CORNELL MEDICAL CENTER URGE NEW YORKERS TO PRACTICE FIRE SAFETY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Traditionally, fire injuries and fatalities more than double during the winter season

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta and Dr. Roger Yurt, Director, Hearst Burn Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center tomorrow will hold a Holiday Fire Safety press conference at the FDNY Fire Zone to urge New Yorkers to exercise caution this winter season. While the holiday season is traditionally a joyous occasion, it’s often marred by unnecessary and preventable tragedies. On average, civilian fire injuries and fatalities citywide more than double during the winter season (November, December, January and February). The Hearst Burn Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell - the busiest nationwide - can see a patient increase of as much as 20 percent during this time period. According to the FDNY Bureau of Fire Investigation, the leading causes of fire fatalities and injuries are candles, careless smoking and misuse of extension cords.

The event will be held at the FDNY Fire Zone, a state-of-the-art fire safety educational facility located in Rockefeller Center. A variety of “holiday hazards” will be on display. Fire safety education materials will also be available in a number of languages including Mandarin, Urdu, Russian, Spanish, Yiddish, Korean and Arabic.
