SECRETARY MICHAEL CHERTOFF AND
MEMBERS OF THE NEW YORK CITY DELEGATION
Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta and senior FDNY officials met today in Washington, DC with Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to discuss security issues facing New York City and their impact on Fire Department operations, including the Fire Department’s Tiered Response to Terrorism Strategy and other operational competencies as it relates to homeland security.
“One of the things we discussed was subway security and Secretary Chertoff made it clear that subway and railroad security is an extremely high priority for DHS,” Commissioner Scoppetta said.
Following his meeting with Secretary Chertoff, Fire Commissioner Scoppetta also met with members of the New York Delegation including U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Congressman Peter King (R-NY) to discuss ongoing needs within the Department.
“The willingness of Secretary Chertoff and the members of the New York delegation to meet with us demonstrates their commitment to ensuring that the men and women of this Department have the resources necessary to protect the people of New York City,” said Fire Commissioner Scoppetta. “An ongoing commitment from all levels of government will ensure that public safety and homeland security are not compromised and that our first responders are all properly equipped to perform their life-saving work.
