FIRE COMMISSIONER NICHOLAS SCOPPETTA TO PRESIDE AT ANNUAL FDNY MEDAL DAY CEREMONY

Event Honors Firefighters, Fire Officers, Fire Marshals and Fire Companies
for Heroic Actions in the Line of Duty

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta tomorrow will preside over the annual FDNY Medal Day Ceremony. The event, held in front of City Hall, will honor firefighters, fire officers, fire marshals and fire companies for heroic rescues at fires, water emergencies, collapses and fire investigations. This year’s top honor – the James Gordon Bennett Medal – will be given to Firefighter Victor J. Rosa, Jr. of Queens Ladder Company 138. Firefighter Rosa rescued three victims, including a 4-year-old child from a Jackson Heights fire on December 15, 2004 . Firefighter Rosa entered the floor above the fire without the protection of a hose line to rescue these victims. In total, the fast moving fire killed two civilians and seriously injured 15 others. Five other firefighters will also be honored tomorrow with medals for their heroic actions at this fire.

Also among the medal winners is Firefighter Jeffrey Cool, who was critically injured in the January fire that claimed the lives of Lt. Curtis Meyran and Lt. John Bellew. Firefighter Cool will be honored with the Emily Trevor/Mary B. Warren Medal for performing a roof rope rescue on June 12, 2004 in which he was able to save a man from a fourth story apartment window.
