Fire Department Stages Drill To Test
FDNY Incident Management Team At
Simulated Urban Terrorism Disaster

On Monday, May 9, the Fire Department will hold a daylong Incident Management Team Functional Exercise at the Fire Academy on Randall’s Island. Utilizing two, 12-member Incident Management Teams (IMTs), these teams will respond to an urban terrorism disaster event. The specifics of the event have not been released so as to preserve the authenticity of the exercise. However, this exercise will include multiple “events” and a hazardous materials component.

Each team will occupy a separate room and will have LIVE radio and phone communications with a “control team” who will modify the exercise as necessary. Each IMT is comprised of experienced Fire and EMS members who have had extensive Incident Command System (ICS) training. Since 2003, more than 100 Department members have received extensive classroom and field training from federal instructors in utilizing ICS to manage large-scale, long-term disasters. That same year, members received hands-on training at major forest fire sites in the Western states. Tomorrow’s exercise is designed to test and sharpen the skills of these teams as well as identify any gaps in response.

U.S. Representative Peter King (R-NY), representatives from the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, New York State Office of Public Security and the U.S. Forest Service will be on-hand to observe and evaluate the exercise.
