FDNY AND NEW YORK BLOOD CENTER KICK OFF
BRONX BLOOD DRIVE IN HONOR OF FALLEN HEROES AND
IN SUPPORT FIREFIGHTERS CRITICALLY INJURED
IN LAST WEEK’S DEADLY BLAZE
Special blood drive in honor and memory
of Lts. Curtis Meyran and John Bellew and
Firefighter Richard Sclafani; Community is encouraged to show
support by donating blood
Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta tomorrow will be joined
by Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion to urge the community
to donate blood. A special blood drive will be held tomorrow
in honor of Lts. Curtis Meyran and John Bellew and Firefighter
Richard Sclafani. All three men made the Supreme Sacrifice
on Sunday, January 23, 2005. Lts. Meyran and Bellew were fatally
injured battling a three-alarm fire in a four-story apartment
building in the Bronx. Firefighter Sclafani was fatally injured
after responding to a two-alarm fire in the East New York
section of Brooklyn.
The blood drive will help replenish the general blood supply
and will support Firefighters Joseph P. DiBernardo and Jeffrey
G. Cool of Rescue 3 and Firefighter Eugene Stolowski of Ladder
27 who remained hospitalized in critical condition. All three
were injured in the Bronx fire after being forced to jump
from a fourth-story window. A fourth firefighter, Brenden
Cawley, was released from St. Barnabas hospital on Saturday,
January 29. In total, more than 85 units of blood were utilized
during the first 72-hours after the fire.
