Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta Announces
2004 First Quarter Civilian Fire Fatality Statistics
Down Nearly 30% Compared to 2003 Figures
Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta today announced the first quarter civilian fire fatality figures for 2004, which show a decrease of nearly 30% compared to 2003. In 2003, from January through March, there were a total of 44 fire deaths. In 2004, that total is 31.
"These statistics show that the Fire Department continues to perform its duties--protecting the lives and property of people living in and visiting New York City-at the highest level," said Fire Commissioner Scoppetta. "Even with an increased mandate that addresses terrorism and a host of other threats facing the City, we continue to handle traditional emergencies with deft and efficiency. Our community outreach efforts, through Fire Prevention and Fire Safety Education, also continue to be effective tools in educating the public. We hope to see a continued decrease in civilian fire fatalities throughout the year."
