STATEMENT FROM
FIRE COMMISSIONER NICHOLAS SCOPPETTA

In light of the ongoing investigation regarding the assault of Firefighter Robert Walsh on New Year’s Eve, and the actions that followed, I have ordered the reassignment of the following officers and firefighters from the firehouse to off-the-line administrative positions, pending the outcome of the investigation. The reassignments are effective today:

Captain Terrence M. Sweeney (Ladder 76)
Lieutenant Raymond Kane (Ladder 76)
Lieutenant Daniel Kenny (Engine 151)
Lieutenant Gregory McFarland (Battalion 32)
Firefighter David P. Johnsen (Engine 151)
Firefighter Joseph Spitalieri (Ladder 76)

With four different agencies conducting investigations of this incident, I welcome the involvement of the City’s Department of Investigation (DOI) as the lead investigative agency. I have spoken with DOI Commissioner Rose Gill Hearn and have pledged to her the full cooperation of the Fire Department. In particular, our Bureau of Investigations and Trials will work closely with DOI to ensure the investigation is as thorough and complete as possible.
