Message From:
The Chief of Department
Teamwork and cooperation go hand in hand. The
Emergency Medical and Fire Services are renowned for
these attributes. Never were the two qualities more in evidence
than at Brooklyn Box 1326, 145 11th Street, a trench cavein
rescue, on June 27, 2006. The combination of EMS personnel
and Firefighters joined forces to extricate two brothers who were
buried under 15 feet of concrete below grade at a reconstruction
site.
Two Paramedics--Brian Frayne and Joel D. Pierce--went
above and beyond to provide collapse rescue and crush medicine
in the delivery of pre-hospital medical care to the brothers.
Employing their specialized training and skills (operational training
in trench rescue at Randall’s Island and instruction in crush
medicine through the Office of Medical Affairs), the pair truly
made a difference in the lives of two men. Working with
Firefighters, the Paramedics provided their medical expertise. Each rescuer knew his job and performed according to his training,
to bring about a successful conclusion to the incident.
Heartiest congratulations to all of the EMS personnel being
honored today. You’ve performed well, frequently under difficult
conditions. Thank you for bringing your special skills to the table
to mitigate a wide variety of medical emergencies.
