Medal Day 2004
Chief of Department, Frank P. Cruthers
It is, at once, both exhilarating and humbling to participate in the awarding of Department medals. Today’s ceremony reminds us of the extraordinary life-affirming and lifesaving actions selflessly undertaken by Firefighters and Fire Officers, just doing their job. The stories of their accomplishments invigorate and inspire us. It can truly be said of the members of the Fire Department of New York that, Uncommon valor is a common attribute. Congratulations to our individual and unit medal winners. And, congratulations to all of you who daily respond rapidly, expertly, professionally, bravely to assist, save and comfort those in danger. We celebrate the deeds of the select few today, but we do so mindful that our operations are team efforts and that it is your total confidence in one another that allows you to put yourselves in harm’s way and perform those extraordinary feats routinely.
