Mayor of New York City, Michael R. Bloomberg
The City of New York once again has been named the safest large city in the United
States and in 2002, we experienced the fewest number of fire-related deaths in
75 years. This is due, in part, to the tremendous efforts and bravery of the
men and women of the Fire Department of New York.
I am always proud to join with the FDNY and today we come together
to pay tribute to the heroism and exemplary service of this year’s
Medal recipients and all those Firefighters who served at the
World Trade Center.
Their efforts have been a source of inspiration
for so many throughout the
world and are a testament to New York City’s strength and spirit. These
Firefighters have gone above and beyond the call of duty and Medal Day is
a wonderful occasion to honor these heroes. I congratulate each of them and
extend
my deepest appreciation for their commitment to ensuring the safety of the
people of New York.
On behalf of all eight million citizens, I thank today’s honorees and
all 11,000 members of New York’s Bravest for their continued dedication,
professionalism and courage as they risk their own lives everyday to protect
ours. As members of the most respected fire department in the world, your efforts
are an immense source of pride and comfort for all our residents and visitors.
