The Mand Library is named in memory of longtime Deputy Commissioner
and former First Deputy Fire Commissioner George F. Mand who collapsed
and died at the scene of a third alarm fire at 164th Street and
Ogden Avenue in the Bronx. In his will George Mand provided funds
to establish a permanent memorial bearing his name on the grounds
of the Fire Academy on Randall's Island for the benefit of the New
York City Fire Department. The result is the 3,000 square foot George
F. Mand Library which includes a classroom area and a library as
well as a foyer area which is dedicated to and decorated with memorabilia
of the late George F. Mand.
