On October 15, the call came in at 3:22 PM that the Staten Island Ferry had just been involved in a collision resulting in numerous injuries. It was not until units began arriving on scene just minutes later, that the severity of the incident materialized.

The above photo, taken prior to the incident, shows the Andrew J. Barberi, named after the renowned Curtis High School coach. The ferry, commissioned in 1981, is over 300 feet long with a capacity of 6,000 passengers.
