“The lessons our firefighters are teaching today are very important,” Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano told the visiting school children. “These lessons could save your life, and it can help you save your mom, you dad, your sisters and brothers, and your friends.”

Dozens of fire safety educators were on hand to teach passersby important fire safety tips. Firefighters from the area also performed numerous demonstrations including a roof rope rescue, rope slide and vehicle extraction. Everyone from the FDNY thanked Tishman Speyer for the generous donation of the space.

At the end of the event, Chief of Department Edward Kilduff swore in children from PS/MS 124 in Queens, Our Lady of Perpetual Help and PS 165 in Brooklyn, PS 71 in the Bronx, PS 87 in Manhattan and PS 69 in Staten Island as Junior Firefighters and EMTs. He asked the children to take home what they learned to their families.

Commissioner Cassano also announced during the event that both Target and Fireman’s Fund Insurance with Vanderbilt Properties donated $25,000 to the FDNY Foundation, supporting year-round fire safety initiatives.Fire Prevention Week Kicks off in Rockefeller Center
