FDNY Celebrates Fire Prevention Week 2012

The FDNY is hosting 27 events throughout New York City from Oct. 7 to Oct. 13 to celebrate National Fire Prevention Week 2012. At every event, New Yorkers of all ages have the opportunity to interact with members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit and learn valuable, life-saving lessons in fire safety.

In support of Fire Prevention Week 2012, Target is donating $25,000 to the FDNY Foundation for fire safety education.

National Fire Prevention Week was established in 1922 in memory of the Great Chicago Fire on Oct. 8, 1871, that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 structures. Fire departments throughout the U.S. have since commemorated the anniversary every year, in the second week of October, by informing the public about the importance of fire safety and fire prevention.
