FDNY members gathered at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in Manhattan on July 14 and 15 to celebrate FDNY Appreciation Weekend.
“This is not just a fun couple days, it’s recognizing the great work of the FDNY,” Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano said.
Susan Marenoff-Zausner, President of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, added, “We want to teach the public about what you do on a daily basis. We at the Museum feel like we’re all family.”
The weekend celebration was kicked off by the 11th annual Blessing of the Fleet ceremony.
The maritime tradition included the blessing of many of the FDNY’s 20 vessels, which are responsible for more than 560 miles of New York City coastline and harbors.
The procession included the Three Forty Three, Fire Fighter II, Bravest and a new 31-foot medical response fireboat, followed by a water display.
FDNY Appreciation Weekend included numerous activities for the public, including rescue demonstrations, tours of FDNY apparatus and free CPR classes. There also was a Battle of the Boroughs cook-off and Battle of the Bands competition. |
