Twenty-one FDNY members are ending the year on a high note, after being promoted on Dec. 29.

Five new Fire captains and 16 new lieutenants moved up in the ranks after a ceremony at the FDNY Academy on Randall's Island.

"Today is a day to reflect on the hard work, dedication and sacrifice you have all demonstrated to get to where you are today," said Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano.

Chief of Department Edward Kilduff praised the courage and initiative of each promoted member, "We're no longer a one-dimensional Department. And our strength is derived from the enthusiasm of our members - whether you have 7 years on the job or 27."

Firefighter Jeffrey Callaghan stands to be recognized for his military service during the ceremony. He will be deployed with the U.S. Navy soon.

Among the newly promoted lieutenants was Jeffrey Callaghan, who is a Senior Chief in the U.S. Navy and will soon be deployed to Africa as part of the global war on terror working for the Maritime Civil Affairs Unit.

He said he will travel to small towns and villages for a six-month period, working to improve their infrastructure, as well as the health and education of those that live there.

"I find both [my FDNY and military jobs] rewarding," he said. "You feel great when you have put a fire out . and the same is true when you see the faces of the people from these small towns, they're so happy to see us there, ready to help."
