Radio Repeater System Installed in Times Square Building

First Deputy Commissioner Frank Cruthers, Chief of Operations Salvatore Cassano and other FDNY members helped the Durst Organization unveil its new repeater system on May 31, at one of the real estate company’s properties in Times Square.

The Durst Repeater, installed at 4 Times Square, will provide FDNY members with an added layer of communication at emergency incidents.

The technology enables the Fire Department commander at the scene to speak freely and directly with emergency personnel located in any area of the building. Using a key-initiated system located the building’s lobby, the commander can give orders to firefighters, EMS members and other first responders in the building through their handie-talkies – including evacuation orders and maydays.

“This will enable operations to be more effective, firefighters to be safer and will provide security for those who work and visit this building,” said Commissioner Cruthers.

The new communications system will become part of the standard operating procedure at all nine of the Durst buildings throughout Manhattan.

Several FDNY members participated in the development of the system, which cost nearly $300,000 to create and install (equivalent to 17 cents per square foot) and was funded entirely by Durst.

Also in attendance were Douglas and Jonathan Durst, co-presidents of the Durst Organization; former UFA President James Boyle; Congressman Peter King (R-NY), chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security; and Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-NY), the democratic chief deputy whip.

“Thank you for helping all firefighters and EMS members save lives,” said Boyle.
