From October 14-15, Deputy Counsel to the Mayor Norma
Abbene participated in the Monitoring Mechanisms in the
Fight Against Human Trafficking conference in The Hague, Netherlands.
Global leaders in the fight against human trafficking - including the Honorable Luis CdeBaca, United States
Ambassador-at-Large, and the Honorable Corinne Dettmeijer-Vermeulen, Dutch National
Rapporteur (pictured above with Ms. Abbene) - attended the conference, which
took place in the Dutch House of Representatives. Ms. Dettmeijer-Vermeulen
hosted the international conference and presented her office's 10th Anniversary
Report on Trafficking in Human Beings. Ambassador
CdeBaca spoke at the event. Ambassador CdeBaca plays a key role in publishing
the State Department's annual Trafficking in Persons Report.
The conference commenced with the official opening of Journey Plein Den Haag, a stunning exhibit presented by
the Helen Bamber Foundation, which depicts a young woman
who was trafficked from Moldova to the United Kingdom. At the conference, the
participants exchanged best practices and participated in workshops,
presentations, and round table conferences. Some of the topics of discussion
included trafficking as it relates to immigration laws, raising awareness,
prosecutions, and trials.
