I would like to thank Mayor Bloomberg's office for focusing on modern-day
slavery.
I was shocked to learn that slavery still exists in 2010. In
spite of antislavery laws, there is slavery in almost every country.
Today, slavery does not need chains to hold people. With modern
communication, slavery can be exacted by threats of harm to one's family,
whether they live half a block away or half way around the world.
In the
United States, slavery is most commonly found on farms, in domestic work in
households, in massage parlors, in brothels, or in restaurants. However, slavery
has also been found in hair-braiding salons, janitorial services, nail salons,
gardening services, and even in choirs.
Learn how to identify the signs
so that you can report cases and save lives.
