Fatherhood Initiative

Fatherhood Program

DYCD's Fatherhood Initiative helps fathers reconnect with their children and develop essential parenting skills. DYCD offers fatherhood programming in three distinct categories: Young Fathers (16-24 years-old), Older Fathers (over the age of 24), and Ex-offenders. Because it is hard to be a good parent without a good job, we also help fathers access employment opportunities.

Other support services include:

  • Individual and family counseling
  • Mediation & conflict resolution training
  • Assistance arranging child visitation
  • Peer counseling and father-to-father mentoring
  • GED and/or educational referrals
  • ESOL classes or referrals
  • College preparation

The Fatherhood Initiative is especially important because it not only benefits fathers, it also has a significant impact on the lives of children and their mothers.

Home: Wakefield, Bronx

ProviderVisiting Nurse Services of New York (VNSNY)

Demetrius is the father of a one-year-old daughter named Abigail.  He enrolled in the Visiting Nurse Service of New York Bronx Fatherhood Program in October 2007 because he wanted to find a job and connect with other single fathers.  Demetrius strives to be a role model for Abigail and loves spending time with her.  In fact, he even brings her along to his Fatherhood group meetings.  In February 2008, Demetrius began work as a customer service representative while working toward his GED.  He prides himself on being able to support Abigail both emotionally and financially.
