2010 Honors and Awards

September 2010 – NYC Named one of America’s 100 Best Communities for Young People by America's Promise Alliance and ING
In a celebration of America’s young people and the communities that make youth a priority by implementing programs that help keep children in school and prepare them for college and the 21st century workforce, America’s Promise Alliance has announced its 2010 list of 100 Best Communities for Young People presented by ING. This year, more than 350 communities in all 50 states and Washington, DC, were nominated for the 100 Best competition. The winners come from 37 states and 30 are first-time recipients of the honor. New York City was recognized for the 3rd time as one of the best communities for youth.

May 2010 - DYCD Staff Selected for Prestigious Leadership Programs
Chris Caruso, DYCD’s Assistant Commissioner for Out-of-School Time, was selected as one of 16 Casey Fellows by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The Children and Family Fellowship is a 20-month leadership development program for accomplished professionals designed to increase the pool of leaders with the vision and ability to frame and sustain major system reforms and community capacity-building initiatives that benefit large numbers of children and families. Jessica Vides-Hernandez, Deputy Director of Beacon Programs, has been accepted into the NYC Management Academy. The Management Academy is designed specifically for new and emerging leaders in City government. The Academy's goal is to expose participants to exceptional management practices and offer them a fuller understanding of the formal and informal processes that drive City government.

February 2010 - Commissioner Mullgrav Recognized at Year Up Graduation
On February 2, Commissioner Mullgrav was honored at the Year Up graduation ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street.  Year Up is a one-year training program that provides urban young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 with a combination of technical and professional skills, college credits, an educational stipend and corporate internships,with the goal of connecting them to full-time employment or higher education. Approximately 400 people attended the event, including the parents of Year Up graduates, philanthropists, corporate partners and public officials. Year Up NYC is led by Lisette Nieves, formerly Chief of Staff at DYCD.
