Nurse Sandy McCaffrey of the DSNY Medical Division, wrote these verses in the days immediately after the attack on the World Trade Center four years ago last month. Sandy and her colleagues tended to the medical needs of rescue workers following the collapse of the Twin Towers. She wanted to share her thoughts with us.

HORIZON 9/11
|
The change in our horizon is not welcome
The change in our lives, not welcome
The change in families, forever
As we descend the ramp to a place of such morose
detail, it is difficult to step on the ground
The parsonage is tiptoeing
The parsonage is quiet
Even the morning tiptoes around a new found sun
The day wears and quiet is soon recognized
by the wind
Gales reach equivalence with a dirge that abounds
The wind caresses, the wind steadies and touches
cheeks, defeats tears
Today, a new horizon
A motion from darkness into new light
New sun, and the caress of a new wind |
