NYC DOT Announces "We're Walking Here" Competition For NYC Schools on Eve of International Walk To School Day, Oct. 3, 2012
The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) today announced the launch of the second annual “We’re Walking Here” competition, inviting New York City schools to script a public service announcement (PSA) that promotes walking as a safe, healthy and practical way to get around that is good for the community and the environment. This year’s theme is “Let Your Feet Meet the Street!,” which lets students review grade-specific curricula and also tally how many blocks their class collectively walks during a two-week period. Students then create their own PSA to educate the public about the importance of walking and safety. To participate, schools register online at www.nyc.gov/dot to download contest guidelines and lesson plans that highlight the benefits of walking. The competition’s kickoff is timed to International Walk to School Day, a worldwide celebration and global public awareness campaign for creating safer streets for students everywhere, on Oct. 3. DOT will once again team up with FedEx and the New York City Safe Kids coalition—a collection of City agencies, hospitals and community organizations that work together to prevent unintentional injuries of all kinds to children under 14 years of age—to offer special safety-themed activities at three of the agency’s Safety City locations on that day.

NYC DOT Continues Rehabilitation of Manhattan-bound Lanes of Brooklyn Bridge
As part of the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) project to rehabilitate the Brooklyn Bridge ramps and approaches, a full closure of the Manhattan-bound lanes of the bridge will be required for two full weekends, between 11:59 p.m Friday, October 5 and 6 a.m. Monday, October 8, and between 11:59 p.m. Friday, October 12 and 6 a.m. Monday, October 15. During these two 54-hour closures, all Manhattan-bound traffic will be redirected to alternate crossings, including the Manhattan Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge and the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, an MTA-tolled facility. Brooklyn-bound vehicular access onto the bridge will be maintained via ramps from Pearl Street and Center Street into the contra-flow lanes on the bridge itself. During these weekend closures, there will be additional access to the bridge via the Park Row ramp from Frankfort Street available on both Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sundays and from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on both Sundays. The work will also require the closure of the pedestrian staircase at Frankfort Street between 6 a.m. Saturday, October 6 to 11 p.m. Sunday, October 7. These weekend closures will allow for the restoration of two full traffic lanes on the Brooklyn-bound ramp adjacent to Pace University, an important effort to bring this critical piece of infrastructure into a state-of-good repair. As with recent, related closures of the bridge during this project, motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible and use alternate routes.

NYC Department of Transportation, NYC Department of Parks & Recreation And Central Park Conservancy Announce Roadway Improvements For Central Park
New York City Department of Transportation, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and the Central Park Conservancy today announced a proposed set of improvements for Central Park designed to provide more simplified lanes to ensure separation of pedestrians, motorists and bike riders using the park’s famous and increasingly popular drives. These enhancements, which double pedestrian space to walk and jog on the drives, are based in part on similar lane configurations installed earlier this year in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park that have successfully reduced conflict in the park among users. DOT has notified local elected officials and community board leadership of these plans, and will conduct further outreach to all stakeholders involved before starting to implement the plan next month. Diagrams of the project design are available at nyc.gov/dot.

NYC DOT Commissioner Sadik-Khan, State Sen. Squadron, Elected and Community Officials Cut Ribbon on Delancey Street Redesign, the Latest in a Series of Street Safety Projects Citywide
New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today announced the completion of a sweeping safety redesign on Delancey Street, shortening pedestrian crossings at 14 locations, increasing pedestrian space and crossing time, and enhancing signal timing and travel lanes for vehicles entering and exiting the bridge. Delancey from the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge to the Bowery saw nine people killed in the last seven years and 742 injured from 2006 to 2010, and DOT was part of a working group convened by State Sen. Daniel Squadron and consisting of elected officials and Community Board 3 to address intense pedestrian and vehicle volumes and conflicts. This redesign adds more than 21,000 square feet of pedestrian space throughout the corridor, restricts several vehicle turns and also simplifies travel lanes, making them more consistent where the number of lanes previously varied from block to block. A new vehicle access point at Clinton Street also eases the connection from the FDR Drive, eliminating the need for vehicles to travel through residential streets to reach the bridge via Norfolk Street. The Commissioner was joined by U.S. Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, State Sen. Daniel Squadron, CB 3 Chair Gigi Lee and Lower East Side BID Executive Director Bob Zuckerman at Delancey and Norfolk streets, where new pedestrian space that will be maintained by the Lower East Side BID has shortened the pedestrian crossing by 49 feet and added eight additional seconds of pedestrian crossing time.
