NYC DOT and Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer Collaborate for Quick Restoration of Woodside, Queens, Roadway
New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer today announced that DOT is completing a resurfacing of a critical, seven-block stretch of Roosevelt Avenue between 51st and 58th streets in Woodside designed to restore a seven-block section of a key Queens corridor in need of improvement. Council Member Van Bramer has worked in conjunction with DOT to expedite repairs of the 1.4 lane miles of this well-used corridor. In recent months, Van Bramer and DOT have collaborated on several transportation issues to enhance safety and improve quality of life, including the installation of speed humps on Maurice Avenue and changing parking regulations on Queens Boulevard. The resurfacing operation on Roosevelt, which is composed of milling and paving phases, provides extensive repairs to the roadway’s surface severely damaged by record snowfalls, fluctuating temperatures and which simple pothole repairs are not enough. NYC DOT Announces Search for Innovative Pedestrian Information System to Improve Walkability, Economic Vitality of City Streets
New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today announced a Request for Proposals (RFP) to bring a comprehensive pedestrian information system to sidewalks in key New York neighborhoods. The initiative is a critical first step in making New York City’s world-class streets easier to navigate and even more accessible for New Yorkers and visitors alike, and the first in a series of steps to improve mobility whether you’re on foot, on a bike, in a car or taking mass transit. A coordinated pedestrian information network, known as “wayfinding,” will help pedestrians crack the code for traveling to, from and around the city’s neighborhoods, business districts, transit stops and landmarks on foot. By providing clear, readable signs, pedestrians will be able to better orient themselves to determine how long it takes to walk to key locations. The RFP calls for a system and its elements to be designed and implemented in four New York City districts: Long Island City, Queens; Prospect Heights/Crown Heights, Brooklyn; and Chinatown and parts of Midtown in Manhattan.

NYC DOT Expands Anti-speeding Campaign with City’s First "Skeleton" Speed Boards
New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today announced the installation of skeleton speed boards on two New York City streets in Brooklyn and Queens, the first in a series of citywide installations to call dramatic attention to the potentially fatal consequences of exceeding the city’s 30 m.p.h. speed limit. The signs, temporarily located on the southbound side of 4th Avenue between 38th and 39th streets in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and westbound Horace Harding Expressway and Xenia Street in Elmhurst, Queens, display speeds and also an image of a skeleton if vehicles exceed the posted limit along these two corridors with histories of excessive speeding. The speed boards will be rotated to other locations with similar speeding issues as part of the agency’s ongoing focus to make New York City’s streets safer through its comprehensive “That’s Why It’s 30” anti-speeding safety campaign. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced the skeleton speed boards last month when he joined United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and Commissioner Sadik-Khan to highlight new traffic-safety initiatives designed to further drive down already record-low traffic fatalities and injuries in New York City in conjunction with the U.N.’s launch of its Decade of Action for Road Safety campaign.
