NYC DOT Announces Study To Determine Feasibility Of Streetcars In Brooklyn
New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and United States Representative Nydia M. Velázquez (D-Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens) today announced the start of a five-month study to determine the feasibility of a streetcar network linking Red Hook with Downtown Brooklyn and surrounding neighborhoods. This initial analysis is the first step in determining if this mode, once a staple of New York City's streets, is a viable option to connect the residents and businesses of the rapidly growing Red Hook neighborhood with Brooklyn's broader transportation system and support economic development. The study will include community meetings and a technical analysis of the area's needs and demographics, as well as a look at the engineering advantages and limitations of any prospective project. The study demonstrates the Bloomberg Administration's commitment to finding new ways to improve accessibility and mobility for New Yorkers. Exploring the use of streetcars, particularly in the Red Hook area, was a component of Mayor Bloomberg's 2009 campaign plan to improve mass transit. The study is funded through a Federal Transit Administration grant secured by Representative Velázquez and has long had the support of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, which represents local businesses throughout the borough and promotes a business-friendly environment.

NYC DOT Launches "You The Man" iPhone App to Reduce Drunk Driving in New York City
The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) today announced the release of the "You the Man" iPhone app to reduce drunk driving by giving New Yorkers safe choices for getting home after a night on the town. The app’s find-a-ride feature uses the iPhone’s GPS to identify the closest Taxi and Limousine Commission-registered car services no matter where users are in the five boroughs, making it particularly useful in areas where taxis can be hard to find late at night. The app also locates the nearest subway stations to help plot a safe route home from any bar, restaurant or party citywide. "You the Man" is DOT’s first-ever iPhone app and is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to make New York City’s streets even safer.

NYC DOT Announces City's First "Pop-up Café," Bringing Innovative Public Space to Lower Manhattan
New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner Jonathan Mintz, today cut the ribbon on the city's first "pop-up café"—an innovative, temporary new curbside seating platform that provides workers, residents and visitors on Pearl Street in Lower Manhattan with a needed public space to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee, a quick sandwich, or just to take in the area's busy streetscape. The 84-foot-long, 6-foot-wide wooden platform, landscaped with planters, wire railing and furnished with 14 café tables and 50 chairs, was requested by two local restaurants for public use in this busy lunchtime and after-work district, where quality seating is in high demand during warmer months. While the platform was installed by the adjacent restaurants, which will maintain and remove it later this year at their own expense, any member of the public may enjoy the seating. The program's effectiveness will be evaluated to help determine if similar temporary spaces should be created elsewhere in the city. The Commissioners were joined by CB 1 Financial District Chairman Ro Sheffe and Downtown Alliance Senior Vice President for Planning and Economic Development Nicole LaRusso in front of Fika café and Bombay's restaurant, between Coenties Slip and Broad Street.

City Announces Start of Temporary Redesign of Times Square, Selection of Team to Lead Permanent Redesign of Area
New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today announced that work has begun to install "Cool Water, Hot Island," the winning, temporary design treatment to refresh the streetscape at the Times Square pedestrian plazas, selected last month following a design competition. New York City artist Molly Dilworth created the design's blue-themed pattern based on NASA infrared satellite data of Manhattan, suggesting a river flowing through the center of Times Square, and providing a visual counterpoint to the area's signature marquees and billboards. Commissioner Sadik-Khan and City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) Commissioner David J. Burney also announced that the architecture firm Snohetta has been selected to lead a team that includes many New York City-based designers, engineers and event infrastructure specialists to create a plan for the permanent redesign of the iconic area, which will be reconstructed starting in 2012. Snohetta was selected through the Design + Construction Excellence program, established by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and administered by the DDC. Snohetta's New York office is known for work ranging from the National September 11 Memorial Museum in Manhattan to the library in Alexandria, Egypt.
