NYC DOT And DOB Announce Bikes In Buildings Law To Take Effect Dec. 11
New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and Department of Buildings (DOB) Commissioner Robert LiMandri today announced the City is prepared to implement the Bicycle Access to Office Buildings Law (Local Law 52), which aims to increase bicycle commuting by helping cyclists gain access to secure parking at their office buildings during the workday. The legislation was signed into law by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in August 2009 and was sponsored by Council Member David Yassky and shepherded through the City Council by Council Member John Liu, the Transportation Committee Chairman. DOT and DOB will jointly oversee the Bikes in Buildings Program and overall compliance with the law, which is expected to lead to a broad expansion of bike parking at commercial office buildings across the City and encourage continued growth in the numb commuter cyclists on City streets. Commuter cycling in New York is already accelerating rapidly, with a 26% increase in just the last year alone, and has more than doubled since 2005. DOT today also announced the winners of its second annual Bike Friendly Business Awards, which recognize exceptional employers who support bike commuting, take significant measures to keep their working cyclists safe with equipment and training, or building owners who were already providing remarkable bike access to tenants.

NYC DOT Announces 26 Percent Increase In Commuter Cycling And Calls On Cyclists To Use Lights To Be Seen And Safe
The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) today announced that commuter bicycling in New York City has increased by a dramatic 26% in the last year, building on last year’s unprecedented growth and representing a more than doubling in bike commuting in just the last seven years. The increase comes alongside the expansion of the City’s bike network, with the number of bike lanes nearly doubled the last three years. To help increase the visibility of the growing number of cyclists, DOT staff will distribute bicycle lights at two East River bridge commuter bicycle paths during tonight’s evening rush hour as part of its annual Daylight Saving Time giveaway, reminding cyclists to ride safely and lawfully by using headlights and taillights at night, and particularly during the dark evening commute.

NYCDOT Commissioner Sadik-Khan Announces Program To Accelerate Sidewalk Repairs
New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today announced a pilot program that will help Queens property owners make sidewalk repairs outside their properties more quickly and to resolve violations issued by the DOT for cracked sidewalks, trip hazards and other defects without significant additional cost. Under the expedited repair program, DOT contractors can begin sidewalk repair or replacement work within 45 days of a property owner’s request, which can be made online or by mailing a request to DOT’s Office of Sidewalk Management. The average sidewalk repair process can take several years, and this pilot will quicken the pace. Importantly, keeping sidewalks in good condition improves the safety of all who use them. By repairing sidewalks expeditiously and removing conditions that may cause others to trip or fall, property owners are enhancing the quality of life for their neighbors, while also decreasing their liability for legal action that may result in injuries. Property owners wishing to hire a private contractor to make repairs can now also search an online database listing all licensed contractors at www.nyc.gov/sidewalks.
