Release #06-42
Saturday July 1, 2006

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) in conjunction with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) today announced that (NYSDOT) has ceased operation of the Gowanus Expressway High-Occupancy-Vehicle (HOV) lane due to a strike by the local Operating Engineers Union.

The HOV lane runs the length of the Manhattan-bound Gowanus Expressway from the Verrazano Bridge to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel weekdays from 6:00 am through 10:00 am for buses and vehicles with 3 or more passengers. The barrier moving machine which opens the lane daily is operated by the union's members.

The HOV on the Long Island Expressway, which also uses the movable barrier system, will remain in operation.
