Commencing the week of March 5, 2007, the New York City Department of Transportation Division of Bridges will begin the rehabilitation of the Third Avenue Bridge over the Gowanus Canal.
Currently the contractor, Coppola Paving and Landscaping Corporation, is mobilizing construction equipment in the area. The scope of work requires the replacement of the entire bridge superstructure including: bearings, girders, steel framing, deck slab, asphalt wearing surface, approach pavement, curbs, sidewalks, railings and old conduits/ ducts for utilities. The project is scheduled to be completed by August, 2008.
Throughout the construction duration the contractor is permitted partial street closures on Third Avenue between 3rd Street and 6 th Street and must maintain one vehicular traffic lane for travel in either direction at all times. The contractor is permitted to work for 24 hours per day, seven days a week. For pedestrian access, on each side of 3 rd Avenue the contractor shall maintain either a minimum of 5 feet of sidewalk or a temporary 5-foot walkway in the roadway.
Beginning March 5, 2007, the Contractor will perform mobilization, pre-demolition, utility work and install concrete barriers on the east side of 3rd Avenue. This initial work includes the installation of protective shielding over the Gowanus Canal and the building of a temporary walkway on the east side of the bridge. Prior to Stage 1, there will be partial lane closures only. On March 19th the contractor will begin Stage 1 and place concrete barriers on the east side of 3rd Avenue, closing half the bridge. Additionally, cutting and capping of the water main is planned during the night hours towards the end of March.
Regular updates will be provided as the project develops. Questions about this project may be addressed to:
