Bicycle Commuting Rides

Join DOT staff for special morning and evening commuter rides in honor of Bike Month. Ride marshals from DOT will escort you from via on-street bike lanes, off-street greenways, and on the street through different neighborhoods and traffic conditions. Along the route, there will be various pick-up points for commuters in other neighborhoods. All skill levels welcome. Your bicycle should be in good working order. Helmet is required. See below for the full rules of the ride.

The 2009 NYC Cycling Map and other fun giveaways will be provided to participants. RSVP to hlord@dot.nyc.gov so we know how many people will be participating, locations for pick up, determine the proper number of marshals and giveaways, and if you have any questions.

All rides begin in the morning and end in the evening in Brooklyn at Grand Army Plaza (Plaza Street West and Union Street on the northwest corner).

  • This is not a race so riding will be set at a comfortable pace for all riders. Please take this into consideration and allot sufficient time to get to your destination.
  • If someone experiences mechanical difficulties the entire group will stop until the problem is resolved or other appropriate measures are taken to resolve the problem.
  • Hand signals will be used to indicate turning movements. Hand signal information is located on the back side of the NYC Cycling map in the Safety Tips panel which can be found on DOT's web site at nyc.gov/dot
  • The group will ride single file.
  • There are several designated pick-up points along the Ride route, please arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled pick up time, and have your waiver form signed, dated and ready to be submitted to the Ride leader who will be identified by a fluorescent yellow vest or jacket. The group will only stop for a moment to collect the signed waivers. If no one is at the designated pick-up location at the designated scheduled time, the group will continue with the Ride.
  • If or when you need to leave the Ride, please exit the group by using the appropriate hand signal to make the turn.
