Chief Marine Engineer - Staten Island Ferry

Job Description

Under general direction, supervises and directs the operation of the main propulsion equipment and auxiliaries of a diesel powered ferryboat; supervises and directs all members of the engine room crew. Supervises and directs the operation, maintenance and minor or emergency repair of the main propulsion equipment, boilers, auxiliaries, electrical equipment, steering engines pumps and fuel tanks on New York City ferryboats. Performs all duties of inspection officer below decks. Supervises and directs the care, storage and use of fuel on board ship. Observes all federal and departmental regulations pertaining to the operation of engine equipment of ferryboats. Keeps records and makes reports. Performs related duties.

Qualification Requirements

A valid license for Chief Marine Engineer of Motor Vessels of any H.P. issued by the United States Coast Guard Inspection Service; or an equivalent license in motor vessels issued by the United States Coast Guard Inspection Service. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Preferred Qualifications
Two years experience as a ferry Chief Engineer or equivalent seagoing experience, including but not limited to Chief Engineer’s experience on a comparably powered U.S. Coast Guard inspected vessel or a vessel of a sea service of the U.S. Armed forces.

Once selected for Staten Island Ferry employment, federal requirements dictate that the applicant must either undergo a federal background check as part of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program or already possess a TWIC. The TWIC must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and maintained for the duration of employment. Salary Range: $64,192 / $68,789 - $68,789
