Staten Island Borough Commissioner Tom Cocola
Tom Cocola was named Acting Staten Island Borough Commissioner in July 2007 and Borough Commissioner in January 2008. He has worked at the Staten Island DOT office since February 2005, and has worked on items related to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's Staten Island Transportation Task Force.
From August 2000 to January 2005, Mr. Cocola was Press Secretary for DOT. From July 1998 to August 2000, he was DOT's Assistant Commissioner of Community and Intergovernmental Relations.
Mr. Cocola was the Staten Island Coordinator of the Mayor's Community Assistance Unit from February 1994 to July 1998. From February 1990 to February 1994, he worked for Staten Island Borough President Guy V. Molinari.
Before entering government, Mr. Cocola was a reporter for the Staten Island Advance from December 1986 to January 1990. He previously was a newspaper reporter for the Utica (N.Y.) Observer Dispatch from June 1984 to November 1986 and the Auburn (N.Y.) Citizen from July 1981 to July 1984.
A native of Geneva, New York, Mr. Cocola also is a cum laude graduate with a bachelor's of arts degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He moved to Staten Island in 1986 and currently resides in the Staten Island community of Eltingville with his wife, daughter and son.
