Brooklyn Bridge Gateway: Tillary/Adams Street Area Reconstruction

The gateway to Brooklyn from the historic Brooklyn Bridge will soon be redesigned as part of a capital reconstruction project, anticipated to take place in 2012 with a multi-million dollar budget, encompassing all of Tillary Street and portions of Adams Street. DOT is currently soliciting public input on the design and function of this vital gateway.

This project builds on the work of the Downtown Brooklyn Traffic Calming report as well as recent short-term improvements including 2008 modifications to the bridge entrance. DOT has released the results of its analysis of these modifications, you can read them here.

On January 27, 2009, DOT held a public workshop, attended by approximately 60 people, to begin collecting input for the project.

DOT developed a draft conceptual design for the gateway area using the input from the public workshop. This conceptual design was presented at a second public meeting on June 23, 2009. In September 2011 DOT presented a project update, including an updated conceptual design, to the Community Board 2 Transportation Committee. The committee was excited about the upcoming changes and had constructive comments, which DOT will forward to the Department of Design and Construction (DDC). DDC is responsible for preliminary design, final design, and project construction of the project, and DOT will work with DDC to ensure there is opportunity for continued community input as design progresses.
