NYCWiN is a key element of the City's shared IT infrastructure, and has transformed the delivery of citywide services by automating and streamlining transactions. Secure, real-time data transfer from the field and fixed wireless devices allow for highly coordinated responses and enhanced situational awareness at centralized operations centers, 24x7.

There are currently more than 40 applications serving 22 agencies running over the network, representing hundreds of thousands of wireless transactions every day. These applications connect to:

Mobile and fixed wireless technologies:

• MOBILE: mobile computing solutions utilize ultra rugged handheld computers, tablet devices, broadband air cards, and in-vehicle modems. The City's mobile workforce has the ability to work virtually anywhere within the five boroughs.
• FIXED WIRELESS: fixed wireless solutions include desktop computing modems, emergency voice call boxes, traffic signal controllers, field deployable sensors, and meter collection units.

Cross-Agency systems:

• INTEROPERABLE VIDEO SYSTEMS (IVS): the NYCWiN video management platform, an interoperable resource sharing tool, bridges disparate agency systems to allow for highly coordinated responses and enhanced situational awareness.
• AUTOMATED VEHICLE LOCATION (AVL): the NYCWiN automated vehicle location technology is based on the City's geographical information systems allowing agencies to fleet track vehicles from a central location in real time to more accurately dispatch City resources, to optimize route planning and to monitor vehicle diagnostics.

• Department of Environmental Protection Automated Meter Reading Program - DEP's AMR system measures water consumption at consumer locations throughout the city via devices transmitting data across NYCWiN, providing more accurate and timely bills than ever before.
• Department of Transportation Traffic Management Program - By transmitting traffic data between intersections and DOT's Transportation Traffic Management Center, NYCWiN enables DOT to centrally monitor and wirelessly program traffic patterns during rush hours, special events and emergencies.
• Department of Parks and Recreation Remote Office Connectivity - DoITT has worked with the DPR to make more than 100 remote locations citywide NYCWiN-enabled, providing employees access to email, the Internet and Intra-agency applications.
• New York Police Department Patrol Vehicles Program - NYCWiN has enabled NYPD fleet vehicles to provide officers in the field access to a wide array of crucial information and NYPD applications that improve force productivity and safety.
• Fire Department of New York Fleet and Watercrafts - the FDNY leverages NYCWiN's interoperable video resource tool to stream incident video in real-time from mobile command vehicles and watercrafts directly to the central Operations Center. This significantly increases situational awareness and the ability to execute remote decision-making.
