Port Authority Tentatively Agrees to $47.5 Million WTC
Settlement October 15, 2010
The Port Authority
of New York and New Jersey tentatively agreed to pay $47.5 million to rescue and
recovery workers who claimed illnesses due to 9/11. The settlement, which needs
approval by the Port Authority board, is only for those who sued the agency. It
is separate from a $712.5 million
settlement announced in June with the WTC Captive Insurance
Company.
Like the WTC Captive Insurance settlement, the Port Authority
settlement requires the participation of 80% to 95% of plaintiffs. Under both
offers, plaintiffs can choose to accept or reject the proposal.
