Cigarette Tax Increased

As of June 3, 2008, the average price of a pack of cigarettes in New York City is over $8.00.  At that price, a pack a day smoker will spend $240 per month and almost $3,000 per year on cigarettes.

What you could do with the savings:
  • Rent an apartment with one additional bedroom
  • Lease a new car
  • Pay for daycare or a babysitter for your children
  • Buy tickets to every Mets home game
  • Go on a vacation
  • Pay off student loans
  • Buy a new computer
  • Pay your utility bills for an entire year
  • Buy a gym membership for two
  • Download 3,000 songs
  • Get a weekly massage
  • Hire a weekly cleaning service
  • Have dinner for two in a nice restaurant every week
  • Pay for health insurance
  • Buy a new video game every week
  • Buy Broadway tickets for two once a month

In addition to the cost savings, quitting is the single most important thing smokers can do to improve their health.

Currently, more than 1 million New York City residents smoke, putting themselves and often the people closest to them at risk for cancer, heart disease, emphysema and many other deadly and disabling illnesses.

Don't let your money and your health go up in smoke!
