Online Cessation Trainings

Here is a list of available online resources that are designed for a wide variety of health care professionals interested in learning more about providing treatment for tobacco dependence.

  • Ask and Act Tobacco Cessation Program, offered by the American Academy of Family Physicians, has free physician-oriented podcasts on a variety of topics related to treating tobacco dependence.
  • Basic Skills for Working with Smokers, offered by the University of Massachusetts, is a self-paced course ($125) designed to provide an introduction to the basic concepts needed by professionals working with tobacco users.
  • Bringing Everyone Along, offered by the Tobacco Cessation Leadership Network, is a free one-hour course designed to assist professionals in providing tobacco dependence treatment for  persons with mental illness and substance use disorders.
  • Intake, Assessment and Treatment Planning for Tobacco Cessation, offered by the University of Massachusetts, is a free training session intended to assist clinicians in conducting a thorough intake and assessment interview with a patient who smokes.
  • Rx for Change, offered by the University of California San Francisco, is a free training program designed to equip health professionals with the skills for assisting patients with quitting tobacco use.
  • Smoking Cessation (2006 update), offered by the University of Michigan, is intended to provide a framework for health care providers to assist patients in smoking cessation.
  • Tobacco Recovery Resource Exchange, offered by Rockefeller Colleges Professional Development Program, is a free 21-hour module curriculum focused on integrating tobacco-use interventions into chemical dependence services.
  • Tobacco Treatment Training, offered by Clinical Tools, has two trainings ($80 each) that are designed to provide health professionals with information on treating tobacco users.

Designed for providers participating in the Health eQuits incentive program, this presentation demonstrates the correct procedures for documenting patient smoking status and smoking cessation interventions using eClinical Works' electronic health record system.
