Open Airways For Schools

children and teacherOpen Airways For Schools1 is an educational curriculum for children diagnosed with asthma. Asthma is the most common chronic childhood illness and the number one cause of school absenteeism.

The Open Airways program teaches children with asthma basic information that will help them control their own asthma more effectively, to make hospital visits less likely, to reduce absences and thereby help children achieve their full potential.

  • The curriculum of six 40-minute lessons is offered free of charge during the school day. Every lesson is reinforced with colorful handouts for students and parents.


  • Over 1,400 school nurses and public health educators have been trained to teach this curriculum to third, fourth and fifth graders in public and non-public schools throughout New York City.
