Rat Information portal : NYC DOHMH

Educational and Training Resources

Pest management professionals (PMPs) are required to attend periodic training both to maintain their license to apply pesticides, and to benefit from new information on modern pest control techniques. Course offerings for PMPs are listed at the websites below:

Additional DOHMH Resources:
DEC Recertification Training Course Database
In New York State, certified pesticide applicators must be recertified in each pesticide category or subcategory every three years by the State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). Recertification can be achieved by accumulating the amount of continuing education credits required for each license category or subcategory. All DEC approved pest control courses are maintained in a database that can be searched by subject and location of training.
NYC Rodent Academy
The NYC Rodent Academy is a training program provided by the Health Department to support scientifically-informed rat control. The Academy emphasizes the control of rat populations through an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. After completing this course, agency staff and pest management professionals are better informed for managing rat populations with an emphasis on environmental safety, and program efficiency. The class includes lessons on the biology, behavior and habitat of rats, contributing factors to infestation, effective ways of evaluating site-specific responses and strategies, and strategies for communicating with clients and the public to achieve lasting change. DEC recertification credits are offered with this course.
Purdue University Urban Entomology Correspondence Courses
Purdue University offers continuing education/distance learning in urban pest management with accessible and affordable university-quality training. All the courses can be registered for at any time, can be completed at home or at work without supervision, can be given to one or more employees at a time, and present typical on-the-job pest problems that help the student to analyze problems and provide solutions.
NYC Pesticide Use Reporting System (NYCPURS) Training
PMPs who apply pesticides on New York City owned or leased property are now required to report pesticide use electronically. The NYC Pesticide Use Reporting System (NYCPURS) is a web-based database application designed to record, track and report pesticide use. This system will enable city agencies and their contractors to comply with the pesticide reporting requirements of New York City’s Local Law 37 of 2005. It can also be used by New York State licensed applicators to maintain records of pesticide use on private property, and to comply with New York State’s pesticide use reporting requirements. The Department of Health regularly conducts trainings on how to use NYCPURS. For more information about NYCPURs, please see the Local Law 37 website. For information on training, please call 212-788-1219.
