Radioactive Materials

The Radioactive Materials Division is one of the jurisdictions under an Agreement that the State of New York has with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission and, as such, maintains regulatory authority over the possession and use of radioactive materials at all non-industrial facilities in the five boroughs of New York.

The Licensing Unit is responsible for the scientific review and approval of applications for new, renewal or amended radioactive materials licenses to ensure protection of health and safety from use of such materials. The Field Inspection Unit is responsible for the inspection of these facilities to ensure compliance with all applicable rules and regulations.

Emergency Response

It is the responsibility of the Bureau to respond to all emergency situations in which radioactive materials are involved, or alleged to be involved. Personnel of the Radioactive Materials Division carry out this responsibility on a 24 hour per day, 7 day per week, 365 day per year basis. Examples of such incidents include transportation accidents, damaged shipments, lost or misdirected radioactive materials (including 'red bag' medical waste contaminated with radioactive materials) and accidental contaminations such as ingestion of radioactive materials.
