HEALTH DEPARTMENT RELEASES 2003 MOST POPULAR DOG NAMES AND BREEDS IN NYC

New Yorkers Urged to License Their Dogs

NEW YORK CITY - June 2, 2004 - While dog licensing increased by 5% in 2003, only 1 out of every 5 dogs in New York City is licensed, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reported today. In other canine-related news, "Max" exhibited dogged determination by remaining the most popular dog name fours years in a row, while the "mixed" breed remained the Big Apple's top dog, also four years running - no bones about it.

"The good news is, more New Yorkers are licensing their dogs," said DOHMH Commissioner Thomas R. Frieden, "Unfortunately, 4 out of 5 dogs are still unlicensed. Getting a dog license is a hallmark of responsible pet ownership and is essential in reuniting lost dogs with their owners."

In 2003, 102,004 dog licenses were granted - a 5% increase since 2002, and a greater than 25% increase since 1997.

Dr. Frieden continued, "Responsible pet ownership means also making sure you get your pet vaccinated to help prevent them from getting or spreading diseases, including rabies. And to help reduce the stray animal population, get your pet spayed or neutered."

Most Popular Dog Names, 2003

For the fourth year in a row, Max topped the list, followed by Lucky, Princess, Rocky, Buddy, Lady, and Shadow. Coco and Daisy swapped places for the #8 and #9 slots, respectively. New Yorkers also loved Lucy, who brought up the tail end of the top ten.

2. Lucky7. Shadow
3. Princess8. Coco

5. Buddy10. Lucy

Some New Yorkers were a bit more creative, drawing inspiration from varied sources - their cupboards, perhaps? - with Oreo (#55), Brownie (#56), Honey (#66), Cocoa (#78) and Peanut (#84) making the list. Others seemingly turned on their TV sets for ideas - despite the fact that Rosie (#71), Xena (#81) and Buffy (#100) are no longer part of regularly scheduled broadcast fare.

Owners also took some of 2003's most popular baby names and gave them to their dogs: you can find Samantha (#37), Sophie (#53), Emma (#95), and Tiffany (#97) on both lists. (See list of 2003's Most Popular NYC Dog Names, attached.)

Most Popular Dog Breeds, 2003

The hardy "Mixed" breed was yet again the most popular dog breed, followed by Labrador Retrievers, and Shepherds. Pit bulls gained in popularity in 2003, surpassing Shih-Tzus for fourth place. Poodles are standing tall this year, having broken into the top 10 in eighth place.

How to Get Your Dog Licensed

Dog license applications are available at nyc.gov/health or by calling 311. License certificates and dog tags are mailed to pet owners' homes. Once received, the tags must be attached to each dog's collar. Each dog license costs $8.50 per year (or $11.50 if your dog is not spayed or neutered). Applications for dog licenses need only be submitted once; renewal notices are automatically sent to owners annually, one month prior to the expiration of the licenses.
