PRESS ADVISORY:
DEPUTY MAYOR WALCOTT, HEALTH COMMISSIONER FRIEDEN, AND AGING COMMISSIONER MENDEZ-SANTIAGO TO MEET WITH COMMUNITY LEADERS IN BEDFORD-STUYVESANT TO PROMOTE NEED FOR INCREASED FLU IMMUNIZATIONS AMONG AFRICAN AMERICANS AND OTHER COMMUNITIES OF COLOR
| WHAT: | The flu causes more than 100,000 hospitalizations and 20,000 deaths nationally each year. Many of these serious illnesses and deaths could be prevented by annual flu vaccinations among those 50 years of age and over, as well as those with underlying medical conditions. In New York City, adult influenza and pneumonia immunization rates – especially in communities of color – are lower than the national average. This breakfast with community leaders from Central Brooklyn is an opportunity to discuss how to increase awareness of influenza, and improve vaccination rates in communities of color, specifically in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, Brownsville and East New York |
| WHO: | Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott, Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden, and Department for the Aging Commissioner Edwin Méndez-Santiago. |
| WHEN: | Friday, November 22, 8:30 A.M. – 10:30 A.M. Members of the press invited to stay for duration of the event. |
| WHERE: | Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, 1368 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, between New York Ave and Rev. Dr. Gardner C. Taylor Blvd. Subway: A,C to Nostrand Ave, walk three blocks up Fulton Street. |
