May 28, 2009 – Health Commissioner Thomas R. Frieden and Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein today announced that the City Health Department has recommended closing six more schools - four in East Harlem, and two in Brooklyn - after documenting unusually high levels of influenza-like illness over a number of days. The six schools will be closed as of Friday, May 29, and will reopen on Wednesday, June 3.
The six schools are:
- P.S. 83 (The Luis Munoz Rivera School, 436 students)
in East Harlem, which is collocated with P.S. 182 (The Bilingual Bicultural
School, 424 students). The schools documented 25 cases of influenza-like
illness among students on Wednesday and Thursday.
- P.S. 503 (The Discovery School, 818 students) in
Sunset Park, Brooklyn, which is collocated with P.S. 506 (The School of
Journalism and Technology, 762 students). The schools documented 37 cases of
influenza-like illness among students on Wednesday and Thursday.
- P.S. 155 (The William Paca School, 413 students) in East Harlem, which includes P169 (80 students). P169@P155 is a school for students with disabilities. The schools documented 14 cases of influenza-like illness among students this week.
