NYC COMMISSION ON HIV/AIDS PRESENTS DRAFT REPORT FOR PUBLIC COMMENT
The New York City Commission on HIV/AIDS today released for public comment a draft of a report with recommendations on drastically reducing the spread of HIV, significantly improving control of the epidemic in New York City, and further strengthening the City’s position as a national and global model for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care.

NYC HEALTH DEPT. DISTRIBUTES 25,000 NICOTINE PATCH KITS TO DATE
Since announcing its nicotine patch program less than two weeks ago, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) has distributed 24,922 patch kits to smokers in all five boroughs, with most recipients coming from Brooklyn (29%) and Queens (25.5%), far outpacing Manhattan and the Bronx (19% and 14.5% respectively).

With warmer weather already here and this year’s West Nile virus (WNV) season nearing, New York City Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner Thomas R. Frieden, MD, MPH today reminded New Yorkers that they can help prevent the spread of WNV by reporting dead birds and eliminating standing water from their property.

CITY HEALTH DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATES CASE OF TUBERCULOSIS IN A BROOKLYN RESIDENT
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) is investigating a case of active tuberculosis (TB) in a U.S. born man from the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. The man, who lives in a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) housing development, is on treatment and is not infectious. DOHMH has evaluated approximately 40 of the man’s close contacts for TB. To date, no other active TB cases related to this incident have been found.
