Office of the Medical Director
Through its Office of the Medical Dire ctor, the Bureau participates in the
following partnerships and activities:
- Maternal Mortality and the Infant Mortality Review Committees review city
data to inform programs and make policy recommendations.
- New York City Safe Sleep Initiative:
- Regional Perinatal Forums work with the state Department of Health to link
hospital providers with community-based providers to forge alliances and
networks that improve perinatal outcomes.
- Breastfeeding Initiative: Activities include encouraging breastfeeding by
educating mothers, providers an d the public; seeking support for
breastfeeding mothers in the workplace (see DOHMH Lactation Program);
helping to establish hospital practices to assist women who breastfeed; and
advocating policy to increase awareness and supportive services for
breastfeeding.
Other Collaboration:
The BMIRH Administrative Unit oversees the following:
- Infant Mortality Reduction Initiative (IMRI) works with City Council
designated organizations in areas with the highest infant mortality rates to
improve maternal and child health outcomes through a range of interventions:
outreach, referra ls, workshops, case management and peer education.
The Bureau also works closely with these DOHMH programs at the District Public Health Offices
(DPHO).
