Teen Pregnancy in New York City: 2000-2009
"Teen Pregnancy in New York City: 2000-2009" is designed for organizations and individuals who work to help New York City (NYC) teens make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. This report, prepared by the NYC Health Department’s Bureau of Maternal, Infant and Reproductive Health, presents trends and disparities in teen pregnancy in NYC. Using these data to identify teens in greatest need of services is a first step toward developing interventions that effectively help teens stay healthy and avoid unintended pregnancies.
The data in this report are drawn from two sources. First, live birth, induced abortion and spontaneous abortion data collected by the Bureau of Vital Statistics are used to calculate pregnancy rates for NYC residents ages 15-19 and summarize demographic characteristics of pregnant teens. Second, the NYC Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), conducted every two years, provides information on sexual activity and contraceptive use among NYC public high school students.
Among the report’s findings are that the vast majority (87%) of the more than 20,000 teen pregnancies that occur annually in NYC are unintended (Table 3.1), and that teen pregnancy rates significantly vary by neighborhood socioeconomic status (Tables 1.4-1.6). Teens in high-poverty neighborhoods are three times more likely to become pregnant than teens in low-poverty neighborhoods. Disparities in teen pregnancy rates between black and Hispanic teens─most of whom live in high-poverty areas─and white teens are persistent and show no signs of narrowing.
We hope you find this chart book useful in your own work. Each chapter begins with a set of key findings to facilitate data interpretation. The entire report is also available online, along with Excel tables for readers who wish to create their own graphs.
